The basics for a first-time
RAM buyer:
where to start

Buying your first RAM is a big moment. Let's be honest. Between trims, engines, cabs, cargo beds, towing capacity and options, it can get confusing fast.

At Paillé Chrysler, we are not just here to show you a good-looking truck on the showroom floor. We are here to help you choose the right RAM for your real life. The one that will pull what you need to pull. Carry what you need to carry. Follow you to work, the cottage, the campground, in the snow, in the mud, and in real Quebec road conditions.

Why choose a RAM for your first truck

A RAM is built to provide you with the muscle you need, and to follow you on every outing. Whether you are looking for a truck for work, weekends at the cottage, hunting and fishing trips, or projects around the house, you want a truck that shows up without complicating your life.

That’s why what matters most for a first-time buyer is the balance between comfort, capability and long-term value.

You want a truck for work? Perfect. You want to pull a camper in the summer? That too. You want something with presence that still feels pleasant to drive every day? That is exactly where RAM stands out.

It gives you power when you need it, real toughness for your day to day, towing tech to make life easier, and many safety features so you can drive with peace of mind.

For a first truck, that matters. This is where a conversation with a Paillé expert can make all the difference in helping you choose the right truck.

COMMON OBSERVATIONS

First-time buyers place a lot of importance on maximum towing capacity. However, once you talk to them about their daily lives, it’s often comfort, the cab,
or payload capacity that will matter most to them over the next ten years.

The main RAM categories: the first decision to make

Before talking about colour, wheels or a big screen, start with the basics. Which RAM family suits you?

Ram 1500

The RAM 1500 is the natural choice for many first-time buyers.

Why? Because it is versatile. It can serve light to medium work, your hobbies, your family, long drives and recreational towing. Well equipped, it can pull your camper, utility trailer, boat or powersports toys.

Towing and payload vary by engine. You can reach a maximum towing capacity of 11,220 lb., or 5,089 kg, and a maximum payload of 1,840 lb.(835 kg) with the 3.0 L Hurricane twin-turbo standard-output engine. You can come chat with a Paillé expert to define the best engine for your use.

In short, if you want your first truck for mixed use, the 1500 is often the best starting point.

RAM 2500 et 3500

Here, you step up a category.

The 2026 RAM 2500 and the 2026 RAM 3500 are built for heavier loads, serious towing and more demanding work needs. If you often pull a large trailer, a fifth-wheel, machinery, an enclosed trailer, or a heavy load on the jobsite, we will look at these models with you.

The 2500 can let you tow up to 20,000 lb., or 9,071 kg, and the 3500 pushes capacity to 36,610 lb., or 16,606 kg, both in a specific configuration and when equipped with the 6.7 L Cummins Turbo Diesel high-output engine.

Ram Chassis Cab

The RAM Chassis Cab is a different line.

This truck is designed to be upfitted for your exact trade. It lets you choose a service body, flatbed, dump body or specialized commercial equipment.

In other words, the Chassis Cab is a configurable work base, with an available 6.7 L Cummins Turbo Diesel and an enhanced power take-off. Towing capacity can reach 34,540 lb., or 15,567 kg, with the right equipment.

If you are a contractor or landscaper, or work in construction, transport or a skilled trade, it can be the right tool. For a first RAM for personal use, it is not usually the first pick.

RAM trim levels explained simply

RAM trims are numerous to give you a maximum of choice. Here is a simple way to look at them:

Price and trims 2026 ram 1500

The trick is simple. Do not pay for a trim just because it looks good on paper. Ask yourself instead, “What will I really use every week?”

So, for a tighter, practical budget, you can target an entry trim. If you know you will use the equipment offered and enjoy it every day, you will really appreciate what the higher trims bring.

At Paillé Chrysler, we can help you compare RAM trims directly against available inventory. Taking time to sit in different cabs, feeling the space, driving position, visibility and comfort levels often changes the decision. We are located in Sorel-Tracy and in Nicolet.

Same goes for the engine. We will review with you what you want to pull, carry and do with your truck, then guide you to the engine that makes the most sense for your use.

Key technical points to understand

Let's keep it simple:

  • Towing capacity is what your RAM can pull. Examples: your camper, your boat, your enclosed trailer, your work trailer.
  • Payload is what your truck can carry in the cargo bed and in the cab. Your tools, materials, passengers, gear and more.
  • Engine choice affects power, torque, fuel use, and both towing and payload capability.
  • The cab and cargo bed configuration and equipment also affect towing and payload.
  • The axle ratio is a more technical detail, but it can change towing performance.

Don’t worry. You don’t need to know everything by heart. You only need a Paillé expert to ask the right questions so you end up with the right model, the right trim and the right configuration for your needs.

Configure your RAM: what really makes a difference

Once you choose the right category, it is time to configure.

The cab

If you often carry passengers, kids, co-workers or gear inside, a crew cab quickly becomes appealing. More space. More comfort. More practical day to day.

If you mainly want to maximize the cargo bed and you often drive solo, a simpler cab can do the job.

Cargo bed length

Short cargo bed? Easier to park and to live with every day.

Long cargo bed? More practical for work, materials, tools, ATVs, equipment and longer loads.

Again, this is not about “better.” It is about need.

Options to consider

For Quebec, some options are really worth it:

  • Towing package
  • Trailer hitch
  • Backup camera and towing aids
  • 4x4
  • Heated seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Remote start
  • Winter tires suited to our climate
  • Cargo bed cover
  • Side steps
  • Cargo bed liner

Common mistakes first-time buyers make

We see a lot of first purchases. The same mistakes often come back.

Black Ram 1500, front view, parked next to a white travel trailer.
  • Buying too small. The truck looks great and the payment works, but after three months the camper is too heavy or the cargo bed is too short.

  • Buying too big. A 3500 without really needing it means a truck that is harder to manoeuvre for no reason.

  • Forgetting payload. You can have strong towing, but if you did not account for payload, you can quickly exceed limits once you add passengers, tools, a cargo bed toolbox, lumber, a generator or camping gear.

  • Shopping a monthly payment instead of a truck. Yes, budget matters. Your RAM must first meet your real use.

  • Skipping the test drive. A truck is something you feel. Seating position, visibility, comfort, size, parking. You know quickly once you sit inside.
